What Do You Need to Work at a Cannabis Dispensary?

Cannabis dispensaries are popping up more frequently as cannabis and its products become more popular. More dispensary locations mean a higher demand for employees. However, since marijuana is still a drug, there are certain requirements that must be met for employment- similar to restrictions on selling alcohol at supermarkets and restaurants.

What is the age requirement?

There are two parts to remember regarding age requirements in the cannabis industry. State regulations where cannabis is legal to sell, require employees to be 21-plus. Consumers must also be 21 or older to purchase any cannabis products in a dispensary and identification cards will be checked upon entry. In some states, however, customers can enter and purchase products at 18 years of age if they have a valid medical marijuana card. Age restrictions may vary by state or law, but the general rule is 21 years or older to buy or sell cannabis.

Employers will review a potential employee’s record

Although criminal records or history may dissuade a dispensary employer from hiring an employee depending on the crime, a person can still apply with one. You cannot, however, work at a dispensary if you have a felony on your record. This can depend on the individual state as some laws differ. It’s advised to research your state and dispensary regulations prior to applying. It is also likely that a dispensary will conduct a background check prior to offering an employment opportunity.

Licensing can sometimes be required

In some states, holding a valid license may be required to transport, distribute, or handle cannabis. This can include any type of employee of a dispensary or store manager. The type of license may depend on the state and what the employee’s title is.

What education is required to work at a dispensary?

Educational requirements also vary per state or location. Many dispensaries will only require the applicant to have a high school diploma or GED. However, earning a higher degree or certification can not only increase your chances of getting the job but can help build knowledge about cannabis and become a more valuable employee.
